After spending a holiday walking around Cornwall in 1999, I became fascinated by the Prehistoric Quoits or remains of Burial Chambers. Later that year I walked the Ridgeway, and again found Wayland’s Smithy entrance, a Long Barrow and Burial Chamber. The structures as they remain now, are powerful and imposing. On leaving Wayland’s Smithy, I decided to work on a set of pictures, but as the stones themselves seemed so tactile, I felt that the work had to portray this quality, and so I produced a set of 20 images using a mixture of collage and acrylic paint, building up the surface qualities wherever possible.
